In order to promote interoperability among existing information systems, the GLIS Portal hosts links to systems maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and by third parties. The Portal also provides users registered on Easy-SMTA with the option of assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to the PGRFA they maintain subject to the additional terms of use related to DOIs set out below.
Access to and use of the Portal constitutes acceptance of the following terms and conditions.
Copyright - The contents of the Portal on the FAO website are protected by copyright. The contents of the Portal are owned or controlled by FAO or the party credited as the provider of the content, software or other material.
Re-use of the content - To ensure wide dissemination of its information, FAO is committed to making the contents of the Portal freely available and encourages the use, reproduction and dissemination of the text, multimedia and data presented. Except where otherwise indicated, contents may be copied, printed and downloaded for private study, research and teaching purposes, and for use in non-commercial products or services, provided that: i) appropriate acknowledgement of FAO as the source and copyright holder is given; ii) FAO's endorsement of users' views, products or services is not stated or implied in any way; iii) users do not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything that these terms of use permit. All requests for translation and adaptation rights, and for resale and other commercial use rights should be addressed to [email protected] and submitted via the online Licence Request Form which can be downloaded from the Portal.
Third party content - FAO does not necessarily own each component of the content contained in the Portal. FAO therefore does not warrant that the use of any third party-owned individual component or part contained in the Portal will not infringe on the rights of those third parties. The risk of claims resulting from such infringement rests solely with users of the Portal. If users wish to re-use a component of third party contents, it is the responsibility of users to determine whether permission is needed for that re-use and to obtain permission from the copyright owner. Security - For site security purposes and to ensure that this service remains available to all users, FAO employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. Except for authorized investigations and to maintain required correspondence files, no other attempts are made to identify individual users or their usage habits. Raw data logs are used to determine the number of users and, occasionally, which general domains are accessing the Portal website. The Portal website does not use persistent cookies and data gathered are scheduled for regular destruction in accordance with United Nations and FAO guidelines. Any information provided to FAO by users is held with the utmost care and security, and is not used in any manner other than that set forth in the Privacy Policy, or in any additional site-specific policies, without users' explicit consent.
Amendments - FAO reserves the right to amend these terms of use at its own discretion. Notifications of any significant amendment will be posted on this page.
The Portal also provides Easy-SMTA registered users with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). DOIs are the standard adopted to uniquely and permanently identify Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in the Global Information System of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
In addition to the terms of use of the Portal (see above), registration of DOIs implies acceptance of the following terms of use.
No ownership - FAO asserts no claims of ownership to DOIs acquired through the use of the DOI system, and to user-contributed content, individual items of metadata, including the descriptors associated to the DOI and the DOI targets. FAO will hold DOI name data or any associated metadata solely for the purpose of permitting look-up from a DOI name to the declared metadata (resolution) and vice-versa (discovery). Individual items of metadata and associated DOIs may be incorporated into the user’s content and systems.
No liability - FAO assumes no liability for the content of DOI targets (e.g. links to external websites and databases). The provider of information accessible through the DOI target will be liable for the content and accuracy of the information provided.
Usage statistics and performance analysis - FAO may develop and publish usage statistics and information as to the aggregate activity of the DOI system. FAO may perform system performance analysis and optimization.
