Rice is more than just food in Madagascar—it’s a way of life. The country is home to rare rice varieties found nowhere else on Earth. The National Centre of Applied Research for Rural Development (FOFIFA) conserves this rich heritage with a collection of 7,000+ rice samples, including traditional farmers’ varieties and landraces. With support from the Crop Trust's BOLDProject, FOFIFA is taking a big step to protect Madagascar’s unique cropdiversity by safeguarding 1,082 rice seed samples in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
