Commercialization and market linkages for promoting the use of local rice varieties: A Nepalese case study

This case study aims to contribute towards developing a policy framework for the commercialization of traditional rice varieties and their products in Nepal. It presents the prospects for commercialization and potential for promoting the marketability of underutilized landraces as well as their products, and suggests possibilities to promote value added enterprises for some of the selected traditional varieties. The study concludes that with the enhancement of the profitability of such enterprises, farmers will be willing to participate in maintaining the diversity of traditional rice varieties that need public intervention.
