Altitude Plant Density Interaction on Andean Maize: Contributions to Decision Making
Description
This poster is the result of a research done by Diego Salve et al., associated with the project PR-154-Argentina "Conservación y uso sostenible de los recursos fitogenéticos locales para la alimentación y la agricultura (RFAA) para contribuir a la seguridad alimentaria de los pequeños agricultores de Argentina"project funded in the 4th cycle of the Benefit Sharing Fund (BSF) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) . The research explores whether maize crop yields are limited by a progressive decrease in temperature with increasing altitude in the E-W direction of the Northwest of Argentina. To conduct this research, partners sampled plant density and yields from 8 registered farmer's fields. They found that increased plant density can improve light interception, in so doing, improving yield in high altitude environments. However, further work will be required to explore these conclusions.
